Many people put off a root canal because they expect it to be painful. In reality, root canal treatment is done to relieve the pain of an infected tooth, and with modern local anaesthesia most patients feel little more than they would during a filling. Here is what to expect, step by step.

Quick answer

Root canal treatment is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal and is usually managed with simple pain relief and soft food. The severe toothache that leads people to a root canal usually improves once the infected pulp is removed.

Signs you may need a root canal

  • Severe or lingering toothache, especially at night

  • Pain when chewing or biting

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts after the trigger is removed

  • Swelling of the gum or face near a tooth, or a pimple-like bump on the gum

  • A tooth that has darkened after an injury

  • A deep cavity or crack that has reached the inside of the tooth

Only a dental examination and an X-ray can confirm whether the pulp is infected and whether the tooth can be saved.

What happens during root canal treatment?

  1. Examination and X-ray. Your dentist checks the tooth and the surrounding bone.

  2. Local anaesthesia. The area is numbed so you stay comfortable.

  3. Access and cleaning. A small opening is made, and the infected pulp is removed from the root canals.

  4. Shaping and disinfection. The canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected.

  5. Filling and sealing. The canals are filled and sealed to prevent reinfection.

  6. Restoration. A crown is often recommended afterwards, especially for back teeth, to protect the treated tooth.

Depending on the infection and the tooth, treatment may be completed in one sitting or may need more than one visit.

Does it hurt after a root canal?

It is common to feel some tenderness when biting for a few days. Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the final crown or filling is placed, and follow your dentist's advice on pain relief. Contact your dentist if you have increasing pain, swelling or a high temperature after treatment.

How much does a root canal cost in Hadapsar, Pune?

Indicative charges at SmileSure, based on the IDA Hadapsar Branch fee guide, are:

  • Root canal treatment: ₹4,000–8,000, depending on the filling material used

  • Third molar (wisdom tooth) root canal: ₹7,000–12,000

  • Repeat root canal: ₹8,000–12,000

  • Post and core: ₹2,500–4,500

  • Crown after root canal: from ₹2,500–3,500 for a metal crown, ₹5,000–6,000 for a PFM (ceramic) crown and ₹10,000–12,000 for a zirconia crown

Your exact cost is confirmed after examination.

Is it better to remove the tooth instead?

Saving your natural tooth is usually the better long-term choice. A missing tooth can lead to neighbouring teeth drifting and may later need an implant or bridge to replace it. Your dentist will advise whether the tooth can be saved.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a root-canal-treated tooth last?

With a good restoration, regular check-ups and good oral hygiene, a treated tooth can last for many years.

Can I go to work after a root canal?

Most people return to normal activities the same day.

Do I always need a crown?

A crown is often recommended for back teeth, which take heavy chewing forces. Your dentist will advise based on how much tooth structure remains.
